A surfer was rescued by lifeguards in Porthtowan after he was swept towards rocks by strong currents. RNLI lifeguards sprang into action on Porthtowan beach yesterday afternoon when they spotted the learner surfer in difficulty. Lifeguards Adam Bunt and Josh Lawrence launched the inshore rescue boat (IRB) and sped towards the surfer who was clinging to his board. They pulled him from the water, saving him from hitting the rocks. Martyn Ward, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, said : "We're on very high spring tides at the moment, which creates a lot of water movement, this, coupled with the remaining westerly winds from the weekend created a strong northerly drift along the shore line on Porthtowan yesterday. "The charity's lifeguards who patrol this beach quite often face conditions like these, and had compensated by placing the bathing and surfing areas at the southern end of the beach. When the surfer was caught by the current, Josh and Adam where quick to respond and experienced in launching the IRB in these conditions, quickly rescuing him before he was in danger."
