Cornwall's women golfers got their first win of South West Inter County Match week with a 6-3 victory over Dorset at Woodbury Park, near Exeter, on Tuesday. It was a morale boosting victory for the county, who had lost 5-4 to Devon the previous day in their opening match of the week. The wind dropped and fine conditions prevailed for the day and the morning foursomes went well for Cornwall as Sarah-Jane Boyd and Sammy Giles cruised through 7&6, having putted very well. Georgia Price and Judith Ryder had a tough match, losing two down, but Rachael Lloyd-Phillips and debutant Eugenie Knight had a good start and were three up after nine holes. Dorset though came back and they were all square on 18, but the Cornwall pair won the hole to give the Duchy a vital 2-1 lead at lunch. It was Knight's first point for Cornwall. The afternoon singles were tight and could have gone either way, but England squad member Boyd won the first match 4&3 and Giles had a very good one up win against Sophie Keech. Although Knight lost one down, Price and back-marker Jan Sergeant added another two points to give Cornwall a 6-3 victory. Cornwall play Gloucestershire on Wednesday. Other results: Gloucestershire 7 Somerset 2; Devon 7 Wiltshire 2
