Plans to reopen a former Falmouth nightclub venue which had plagued residents for years have failed. Cornwall Council's licensing committee refused to grant a new premises licence for the building on Quay Hill. It felt the building was not suitable for such a business and had concerns about historic problems at the location. Michael and Angela Hill, who own the building and had previously leased it out, had hoped to open a pub style venue called The Old Gaol. It had previously been run as Shades, then Mama Africa and Club Chic. Club Chic's licence was revoked earlier this year. But the fact that these previous businesses had breached conditions and the licence being revoked, prompted a firm no from the committee. It heard from a number of neighbours who said they had suffered years of torment because these breaches which led to problems with noise from music and patrons and antisocial behaviour. Bob Mears, licensing compliance manager for Cornwall Council, told the committee that although applications should be judged on their own merits, the history of the premises must be considered. Afterwards he said: "We are very pleased with the outcome of the hearing. "We feel this application wasn't a true reflection of what may have operated within the premises and the neighbours concerns and previous problems had to be taken into account." The couple's agent, Graham Eva of GE Licensing Solutions said they were "disappointed" with the result. Once they receive the official refusal notice they will discuss their options, which include appealing and looking at alternative uses for the building.
