Wartime Weekend in St Newlyn East

St Newlyn East has gone back in time as the Wartime Weekend returns for a second year.
The village hall and recreational ground were transformed into a little corner of the 1940s today as Second World War re-enactors pitched their encampments, complete with military vehicles and vintage outfits and accessories.
Participants had embraced the wartime theme with enthusiasm and there was a celebratory atmosphere as Second World War soldiers mingled with landgirls, examining the military displays, browsing the vintage fair or enjoying tea and cakes from Alegria Baking.
For those who had come without a costume there were plenty of vintage outfits on offer from traders including Cornwall Boogie Woogie, Black Cat Boutique and Shabby Tiger. And Miss Curly Pearl was on hand to give the ladies an authentic make-over with hair and make-up.
Liz Lane, of WWII Re-enactment South West, organised the event along with Clare Alvarez-Howard of Alegria Baking.
She said she regularly attends re-enactment events but had wanted to set one up in St Newlyn East to bring something back to the village. Last year the event raised about £1,400 for charity.
Ms Lane added that the event not only helped people find out more about the Second World War, it also brought them together.
"It's very easy to slip into," she said. "From little ones to the older generation, it encompasses everyone. Everyone has a good time. It brings it alive and you get chatting to all sorts of like-minded people. There's a real sense of community and everyone really enjoys being part of it."
Ms Alvarez-Howard agreed. "It's nice to bring history alive. To bring it to the forefront of people's lives. And it's nice to take a day out from 2012, to move away from modern technology."
The fun continues into the evening with a 1940s dance. Tomorrow the re-enactors will return to the field and there will be a film shown in the village hall, as well as a tap dance display.
