The afternoon will see some sunny spells among the cloudy conditions.

Temperatures will reach a high of 19c, before the weather turns cooler this weekend.

There will be some wet and windy weather which will spread eastwards across the region overnight, the rain likely heavy at times.

Drier conditions should start to push into the west by dawn with a minimum temperature of 8c.

On Saturday the rain will clear away to the east through the morning.

Brighter and drier conditions should follow with lengthy sunny spells and perhaps the odd shower.

It will feel cooler than of late, with a maximum temperature of 15c.

Police are appealing for the public's help to find a missing Taunton man who they believe could be in Cornwall.

William Douglas, 52, has not been seen since 7am on Wednesday, October 1, when he left for work, which he did not attend.

He was reported missing to police who have been conducting enquiries to locate him.

William is described as white, 5ft 11ins tall, with grey hair and a Scottish accent. He was last seen wearing jeans, a grey zip-up coat and glasses.

It is possible William may be in the Cornwall and Devon area and that he may be travelling in his 2012 registered grey Hyundai i30 Comfort car.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen William or knows of his whereabouts to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101, quoting reference MP2447/14.

VIDEO: Injured badger cub released back in to wild by Portreath wildlife centre Feadon Farm

A TINY badger cub who was hit by a car and left for dead at the side of the road has been released back in to the wild.

At less than a year old Bob the badger is lucky to be alive after he was hit by a motorist driving though Portreath.

Now, after just a week of rehabilitation at Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre in Portreath the fluffy forager has been returned to his natural home.

Bob, named after Bob Speechley from Cornwall Badger Rescue, was hit on a known badger crossing point on Portreath Hill.

Although the driver did not stop, witness Kristan Langton, a young couple and Feadon Farm wildlife ranger Alyson Zammit, pulled over to help the cub and make sure traffic avoided him.

"When I saw him I thought he might have just needed to be put out of his misery," Mrs Zammit said.

"He had blood coming out of his nose and he couldn't even lift his head - the next car would have killed him."

Mrs Zammit called her husband Gary, who also works as a ranger at Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre, and the pair rushed him to C-Vets in Truro.

Mr Zammit said: "We wrapped Bob in the only thing we had at the time, Alyson's dressing gown.

"I've often warned her that her habit of ferrying our daughter Mirren around in her nightclothes would one day catch her out and I haven't missed the opportunity to gloat."

Despite appearing badly injured, the vet said that Bob was just suffering from concussion and he was given painkillers and anti-inflammatories before being prescribed rest in a warm, dry stable at Feadon Farm.

Bob made a speedy recovery and thanks to a Facebook appeal the rangers were able to track down and invite Mr Langton and his family to see the badger's re-release.

(Video courtesy of Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre and Gwel an Mor holiday resort, Portreath)

Mr Zammit added: "We were all delighted with how quickly Bob recovered.

"It was a real happy ending and such a pleasure that Kristan and his family could join us to see Bob back to the wild.

"Seeing the joy on his children's faces as they realised this could not have happened without the help of their dad was really special."

But the pair fear that more badgers may be hurt on the same stretch of road in the future.

Mrs Zammit added: "They are study little things, but we have lived here for seven years and we have seen five badgers killed within a five metre gap.

"The problem is they are creatures of habit and they cross right on the bend of the hill which people drive around quite fast. The sad thing is that they would have all been from one set."

Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre, part of the Gwel an Mor holiday resort, is undertaking a five year badger vaccination programme to prevent the spread of tuberculosis.

Match preview: Cornish Pirates head to Doncaster keen to build on first league win

With a win and their first Greene King IPA Championship points at last in the bag following their 29-19 end of September win against Moseley last Sunday, the Cornish Pirates make the long journey to Yorkshire this Saturday looking for more of the same when they do battle with Doncaster Knights.

'Donny', who made a swift return to the Championship following their relegation at the end of the 2012/13 season, have made an impressive start to their campaign. They are presently fifth in the table and will be on a high having won the bragging rights with a stunning 32-23 points derby win at Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday.

Saturday's encounter at Castle Park (2.30pm) will be the last league game for the Pirates until they play Nottingham at home on the 9th November, as three scheduled fixtures that follow this coming weekend will all be in the Cup.

Looking ahead to this Saturday's trip to Doncaster, Pirates Director of Rugby Ian Davies said: "Playing Doncaster away is never an easy place to go and they are presently flying high on making a prompt return to the Championship. Their supporters with also be cock-a-hoop with the win away to Yorkshire Carnegie.

He added: "It is important that we take the confidence gained from our win against Moseley and our aim is to take the points again this weekend.

"The line-up should also be much of a muchness as we strive to look for continuity."

Indeed, Davies has made only one change to the starting line-up from the side that ran out winners against Moseley. Joe Atkinson, who performed well last weekend drops to the bench, enabling a fit again Alex Cheesman to wear the No7  shirt.

Player/coach Gavin Cattle is listed among the replacements, as is Laurence May who will be keen to make his first Championship appearance for the club.

Doncaster Director of Rugby Clive Griffiths makes two changes to the side that defeated Carnegie last weekend at Headingley.

Tom Davies and Jon Phelan are and both named on the bench in an unchanged match day 22. Richard List will pack down with Ben Hunter and Colin Quigley in the front row with Tyler Hotson accompanying Matt Challinor at lock.

The back row that had such a successful afternoon last weekend continues with Latu Makaafi at blindside flanker, skipper Michael Hills at openside and Alex Shaw at No8. The backs line-up remains unchanged for a fourth straight game.

Doncaster Knights: 15 Paul Jarvis,14 Dougie Flockhart, 13 Mat Clark, 12 Bevon Armitage, 11 Tyson Lewis, 10 Jamie Lennard, 9 Tomasi Palu, 1 Richard List, 2 Ben Hunter, 3 Colin Quigley, 4 Matt Challinor, 5 Tyler Hotson, 6 Latu Makaafi, 7 Michael Hills (c), 8 Alex Shaw. Replacements: 16 Tom Davies, 17 Jack Bergmanas, 18 Ross Davies, 19 Jon Phelan, 20 Paul Roberts. 21 Andy Bulumakau, 22 Bruno Bravo.

Redruth Jonny cat loses his leg after a dog attack

THE owners of a loving family cat which had to have its leg amputated after being savaged by a dog have been left devastated.

Five-year-old Jonny was viciously mauled by a Staffordshire bull terrier outside his home in Claremont Road, Redruth, on Sunday morning.

On Tuesday the pet was due to have its left leg amputated to save its life.

Owner Louise Avery, 41, said: "We were getting ready to go to my parents' golden wedding anniversary celebrations when approximately at 10.30am our next door neighbour said we better come outside and find our cat.

"He had been painting his windows when he heard this noise and a dog barking. He got off his ladder to see what was happening and at that moment this dog let go of the cat and Jonny escaped.

"The dog was on a lead with a young female owner and apparently she just walked away."

Jonny was badly injured and was rushed to the emergency vets in Truro.

He suffered from extreme shock and was badly wounded.

Mrs Avery added: "There was a great pool of blood so we got some towels and wrapped him up and rushed him to the vets.

"He was operated on on Tuesday and has to have his left leg removed. He will also need lots of treatment to get him back to somewhere approaching normal.

"It was one of the worst things I have ever seen and my kids were very upset."

The family reported the incident to the police and local dog wardens.

They are concerned for other cats and possibly children.

Mrs Avery said: "A dog that can react in such a way is of obvious concern. It could happen to a small child. We want people to be aware of this dog and find the owner to make her liable for what happened."

The family has also started a fundraising campaign and raised more than £250 to help pay vet fees. They said if the owner of the dog agreed to pay for the costs they would donate any funds raised to the Cats Protection charity.

Police in Camborne have confirmed they are investigating an alleged incident involving a "dog dangerously out of control".

Front desks at police stations across Cornwall are to close

FRONT desks at police stations across the county are to close as Devon and Cornwall Police bids to save thousands of pounds.

Police and crime commissioner (PCC) Tony Hogg is pushing through plans to close 12 of 21 public offices in Devon and Cornwall.

In Cornwall, doors will be shut at Falmouth, Penzance, Launceston, Bude and Liskeard while Newquay will only be open in the summer.

Only Truro, Bodmin, St Austell and Camborne will keep a public access point.

A force spokesman said the decision would not be overturned but a police and crime panel meeting on October 17 would consider the issue.

Mr Hogg said £14 million a year more of cuts had forced the closure of desks which, in some cases, dealt with fewer than 10 people a day.

He said he was only persuaded after receiving "robust assurances" that public interaction will not suffer and pledged to ensure "alternative methods of communication" were put in place.

"There must also be improvements to the 101 service identified through a review of the existing service being carried out by my team at the OPC," he added.

"We must all accept that the way we deal with the police has changed over the past few years and understand that savings need to be made now and in the future. However, I am confident the savings made by withdrawing this underused service will help maintain the number of front line police officers over the next four years."

Football: Eddy scores twice after pledging St Austell future

$

St Austell 5, Godolphin Atlantic 1 LIAM Eddy celebrated his decision to pledge his future to St Austell by scoring twice in Friday night's emphatic victory at Poltair Park. The striker has been offered an opportunity to return to Truro City after his former club made contact with him at the weekend. But speaking after watching Eddy produce a man of the match performance on Friday night, manager Phil Laffery confirmed the player has no intention of leaving the CSWPL premier division title chasers. He said: "Liam has had direct contact from Truro since Sunday. I'm naming no names and all the nudging he has had from Truro since then has been quite tempting for him. "Liam decided yesterday (Thursday) that it wasn't an environment he wanted to go back into and I think he has made the best decision for Liam Eddy. He's certainly made the best decision for St Austell Football Club." Eddy certainly made clear where his future lies when he pointed to the Lillywhites' badge on his shirt when celebrating his first goal to put the hosts 3-0 up. Lafferty added: "It was a nice touch and it really went down well with the crowd too. The boy is really enjoying playing for St Austell and after the season he had last year he deserves that." Indeed, despite having a good scoring record for Truro last season he still found himself on the periphery of City's starting XI. And that has perhaps been a big factor in his decision not to play at Treyew Road for a third spell. There was little to separate the sides until Olly Brokenshire turned the ball home in the 28th minute to give Town the lead. And after a Brokenshire cross was charged down by the hand of Scott Flannigan in the box, Lee Whetter doubled the home side's lead in the 40th minute. Having tormented the Godolphin defence Eddy finally made the breakthrough in the 54th minute, using his pace to not only take on a couple of defenders but also goalkeeper Shaun Semmens before rolling the ball into an empty net. Eddy headed straight towards the grandstand to let St Austell's fans know where his loyalties lie by grabbing his badge. And if that wasn't enough to further endear him to the Lillywhites' faithful then his second goal did. After Kyle Brown had pulled a goal back for Godolphin almost immediately after Eddy's strike, St Austell regained their three-goal advantage in the 68th minute. There didn't appear to be much on when Eddy turned in a flash to fire the ball into the roof of the net. The impressive Will Tinsley then completed a highly satisfying night for Lafferty's men when he steered home Eddy's cross in the 79th minute. Family's wish for boy with terminal disease

THE community of Falmouth is rallying around the family of a little boy with a terminal debilitating disease, to make his life as joyful as possible.

Two-year-old Stanley Barnes was diagnosed with the rare incurable disease Sanfilippo type A just four months ago.

Although devastated by the news, his parents Ross and Mari want to make his life, and that of his three-year-old sister Willow, "fulfilling and rich" .

"As you can imagine this has impacted our lives in a massive and unexpected way," said Mr Barnes.

"We grieve for someone who is still here. It is confusing as we didn't know anything about it, neither did the doctors.

"However, it is preparation for Stanley's short future and his sister's ongoing life that we are focused on the most."

"We want to give him so many experiences and smiles as possible with his sister. We want to make sure while he is well that we make the most of it."

Only 40 children in the UK have the disease.

It kills brain and central nervous system cells, which will lead to a loss of ability to do many of the things he is currently learning to do, like reading and writing.

There will then be a period of hyperactivity, followed by the loss of speech, ability to walk and he will eventually need to be fed via a tube and will not recognise anyone around him.

Stanley's Friends has been set up to raise money and the first event is a Great British Eat Off at St Francis School tomorrow afternoon, where Mr Barnes teaches.

The school is heavily involved, with children from Year 6 designing a stimulating Where the Wild Things Are-themed play room for the family home in Mawnan Smith, while others are designing a disabled ramp for outside the house.

Volunteers have already come forward to help create the play room and a sensory garden outside and others have donated items to auction and raffle.

As a result of Facebook site Stanley's Friends, the family have made contact with two other families whose children have Sanfilippo, one of which will be visiting Cornwall to see the family.

It is hoped Stanley will take part in a clinical trial of enzyme replacement therapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital this month.

Bride enjoys a van-tastic day thanks to camper owners

VOLKSWAGEN camper van owners gave a bride a van- tastic special day after driving to the rescue when her wedding carriage broke down.

Bride-to-be Jenna Cook's knights in shining campers revved into action after hearing her wedding day faced a bumpy ride.

Tattoo artist Jenna, 28, married her boyfriend of four years Alex Lucas, 26, after a Cornish pagan ceremony performed by a humanist minister on the beach at Perranporth on Saturday.

Alex, a full-time section commander in 6 Rifles reservists and a Joint Services dive leader, proposed to Jenna on Valentine's Day last year and they originally planned to tie the knot earlier this month – but when the couple, from Kenwyn Street, Truro, found out Jenna was expecting a baby they put the wedding on hold until six weeks ago, when they visited Alex's poorly grandparents.

They also decided the time was right after going on a trip to see Jenna's nan, who is battling cancer.

Jenna said: "Alex had just lost his civvy job, we'd visited the grandparents and thought, 'Let's do it while he has the time off'."

But three days before the wedding the couple learnt that the classic Mustang muscle car which they had planned would whisk Jenna to the ceremony had a mechanical fault and was not driveable.

"Our own car's shock absorbers went three weeks ago," Jenna said: "I just put on Facebook, 'Does anybody have a nice cool car we could borrow?'"

Friend Duncan Scobie posted her plea on a forum for VW owners and members of the Cornwall VW Owners' Club answered her call in droves.

Another friend, Conrad Brown, arranged for the vehicles to be in the right place at the right time.

Jenna said: "In the end we had seven or eight camper vans and it was decided to have a convoy. As I walked down to meet them at the car park behind Marks & Spencer in Truro everybody was cheering, wishing me luck and congratulating me, but when they saw the VWs the excitement got worse and I was a bit worried we were going to cause a crash."

Jenna rode in a teal VW split-screen camper with three of her four bridesmaids, who included her 10-year-old daughter Sky, and her uncle Paul Cook.

"When we got to the beach people were taking photos and staring but I was just more focused on getting to the beach," she said.

"I can't thank them enough; they really came to the rescue.

"If it wasn't for them it wouldn't have been as special; I wouldn't have had that build-up. I'd have driven myself and just pulled up in some random car.

"It's always been my dream to one day own a VW split- screen campervan and the pure chance that I was driven to my wedding in one was a happy coincidence."

Jenna was walked down the aisle, which had been drawn in the sand, by her uncle, and through a guard of honour formed by Alex's Army colleagues, before the couple exchanged vows in a handfasting ceremony.

Neither Alex's grandfather nor Jenna's grandmother, who raised her from childhood after her mother died, were well enough to attend the ceremony – and five-month-old son Travis was unfazed by the excitement of their big day.

"He was fast asleep and didn't wake up until the wedding reception," said Jenna.

British hostage beheading video appears online

A video showing the apparent beheading of British hostage Alan Henning by IS militants has been posted online.

The Press Association reported that the footage appears to show the 47-year-old aid worker, who was kidnapped last December in Syria by IS militants, kneeling beside a militant dressed in black in a desert setting.

Mr Henning, a former taxi driver from Salford, was last seen at the end of a video released last month following the beheading of fellow British captive David Haines.

Earlier this week Mr Henning's wife Barbara pleaded for him to be freed.

She said: "I ask Islamic State please release him, we need him back home."

She added: "Some say wrong time, wrong place. Alan was volunteering with his Muslim friends to help the people of Syria. He was in the right place doing the right thing."

Mrs Henning revealed she had received an audio message of her husband pleading for his life, and had been told that a Sharia court had found him innocent of being a spy.

She told BBC News: "We are at a loss why those leading Islamic State cannot open their hearts and minds to the truth about Alan's humanitarian motives for going to Syria and why they continue to ignore the verdicts of their own justice system.

"Surely those who wish to be seen as a state will act in a statesmanlike way by showing mercy and providing clemency. I ask again, supported by the voices across the world, for Islamic State to spare Alan's life."

The video appears to show Mr Henning say: "I am Alan Henning. Because of our Parliament's decision to attack the Islamic State, I, as a member of the British public, will now pay the price for that decision."

The man dressed in black, who speaks with a British accent, then makes a direct statement to Prime Minister David Cameron: "The blood of David Haines was on your hands Cameron. Alan Henning will also be slaughtered, but his blood is on the hands of the British Parliament."

The video then apparently shows the militant alongside former American soldier Peter Kassig.

The militant says: "Obama, you have started your aerial bombardment in Sham (Syria), which keeps on striking our people. So it is only right that we continue to strike the necks of your people."

The Foreign Office said tonight: "We are aware of the video and are working urgently to verify the contents. If true, this is a further disgusting murder.

"We are offering the family every support possible; they ask to be left alone at this time."

MPs were swift to condemn the apparent murder, one describing it as "an attack on humanity".

Prime Minister David Cameron later said the "brutal murder" of aid worker Alan Henning by Islamic State "shows just how barbaric and repulsive these terrorists are", and vowed to "do all we can to hunt down these murderers and bring them to justice".

Liberal Democrat party president Tim Farron said: "Alan Henning should be remembered for what he was – a kind hearted, selfless man who wanted to help others. My prayers are with his family."

Shadow cabinet minister Jonathan Ashworth said the video emerged only hours after a vigil for his safe return by people "of all faiths and none" in Leicester.

"Dreadful devastating news," he said.

Labour's Pat McFadden said it was the "senseless killing of an innocent man. An attack on humanity."

A PROMINENT pasty crimper and one of the Redruth contingent travelling to Mexico for a pasty festival, has spoken of her pride of being a contributor to a new book detailing the connection between the two areas.

Marion Symonds, managing director at Portreath Bakery, penned a section on the pasty for the new book Cornwall and Hidalgo, a look at the link between Cornwall and an area where many miners migrated to in search of work.

The book was launched on September 8 and has already sold over 100 copies in the UK, as well as generating a lot of interest across the Atlantic in Mexico (the book is written in both English and Spanish).

Mrs Symonds has visited Real del Monte in the past, where she is affectionately known as Lady Marion, the mother of the pasty.

She said: "When I visit Mexico the only thing missing that stops me being a princess is the lack of rose petals.

"The pasty festival is an incredible experience, attracts over 22,000 people and I'm really looking forward to going again.

"During the pasty festival all the bakers bring rolling pins and get together to crimp the pastry. Everyone then egg brushes and turns over the three and a half metres of pastry before carrying it on their shoulders to the truck.

"It is then baked and carried through the streets, cut up and served to 900 people and it is only then that you realise the level of poverty in the country."

The seeds for the Cornwall and Hidalgo book were sewn in 1998 when the late Richard Williams MBE discovered a graveyard in Real del Monte and sought to promote the link between the town and Cornwall.

Over the years relationships were built and production of the book began in 2011.

Mr Williams' best friend and fellow contributor to the book Stephen Lay said: "Richard always begged me to go to Mexico with him but I never did due to preconceived ideas of the country.

"I finally agreed to go when he was terminally ill and it is the most amazing place.

"They don't let us pay for a thing and it is important that we use the past to strengthen the future."

Cornwall and Hidalgo is for sale at the Portreath Bakery or via email at cornwall.mex.book@gmail.com and Mrs Symonds hopes to get the book into a number of local schools to teach school children about the link.

Prince Charles and Camilla to visit Redruth 'twin' Real del Monte during Mexican visit

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be heading across the Atlantic later this month as they embark on a nine-day visit to Mexico and Colombia.

On November 2 the royal couple will be visiting the town of Real del Monte, twinned with Redruth, and a place that many consider to be the birthplace of the historical relationship between Mexico and Cornwall.

Cornish miners arrived in Real del Monte in the mid nineteenth century, to help resuscitate the Mexican silver mining industry.

The miners took with them industrial mining technologies, the Cornish pasty and football, with top-level Mexican football club Pachuca originally formed by Cornish miners.

November 2 is also the Day of the Dead, a Mexican public holiday when people gather to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and visit their graves.

The royal couple will mark the day by visiting the Cornish cemetery in Real del Monte, which contains the only known British First World War memorial in Mexico, to a Cornish immigrant who died at the Battle of the Somme.

They will also visit Mexico City, Campeche and Monterrey and in Mexico City they will receive an official welcome by the President and First Lady at the presidential palace.

Clarence House said their visit was at the request of the British Government, following invitations from President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon of Colombia and President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico.

"The visit will be a major boost to the bilateral relationship between the UK and these two dynamic and influential nations in Latin America," a spokeswoman said.

The Prince has visited Colombia just once before – in 1974 as a naval officer on the Devonport-based frigate HMS Minerva. He has visited Mexico four times – in 1966, 1970, 1993 and 2002.

The Duchess has visited Mexico privately and this will be her first visit to Colombia.

Helicopter rescues experienced swimmer near Perranporth

A swimmer and her would-be rescuers were airlifted to safety near Perranporth last night.

RNLI volunteers and local Coastguard volunteers were called to rescue a swimmer who had become exhausted and stranded on rocks in strong swell shortly before 6pm yesterday.

The D class lifeboat attempted to fight through the eight-foot surf between Droskyn Point and Cathedral Cavers but was unable to reach the girl, a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose eventually winching the girl to safety.

Two girls had originally entered the water and when they got into trouble, one managed to get out and call the Coastguard to raise the alarm.

The lifeboat proceeded to the scene and with the assistance of St Agnes coastguard team, was able to locate the casualties.

A crewmember said: "We'd been made aware that two men were stuck at the base of the 100-ft cliff near Cathedral Caverns trying to help the girl, so on arrival we went straight there but couldn't get near as the waves were at least six foot.

'We radioed to the coastguard that a helicopter was needed and then went to the girl who was in the water and pulled her into the boat. She was very shaken and grateful that we were there.

"She was an experienced swimmer so it just goes to show it can happen very quickly to anybody. We checked her over and then took her back to the beach, before getting out through the surf to wait for the helicopter as we didn't want the two men to re-enter the water.

"The lifeboat stood by while the two men were winched from the rocks and landed safely at the top of the cliff, met by St Agnes coastguard."

Martyn Ward, who was acting as lifeboat operations manager at the time of the incident, has warned of the dangers of autumn swells.

"The rescue was a fantastic joined up effort by St Agnes Coastguard team, the volunteer lifeboat crew and the Royal Navy search and rescue helicopter.

"There are clearly still a lot of people using the water as the autumn swells begin to build so it's paramount people take extra care around the coast and put safety first. Our advice is to always check the conditions, know your limitations in the water and if you see somebody in difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
