Police are urging the public to remain alert and stay safe with more heavy rain forecast for Devon and Cornwall tonight. Further rain is expected to fall widely overnight in Devon and Cornwall, peaking between 3am and 6am on Saturday morning. With this rain falling on already saturated areas, localised flooding and disruption to travel is expected. As the rain will fall during the hours of darkness the police are urging the public to be vigilant. Many people will be travelling home in the dark following Christmas social events and the message from the police is please take extra care. Police said public should delay any unnecessary journeys. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "If you are travelling by road please drive to the conditions and keep your speed down.
"Driving in the dark in rural areas can be particularly hazardous in difficult conditions and depths of water can easily be underestimated, and it only takes 30 cm of water to float a car, and you can quickly become stranded." In the event of heavy rainfall, drivers are asked to please check the Met Office website first at:http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/sw/sw_forecast_warnings.html and also www.environment-agency.gov.uk which has the latest warnings and advice on staying safe.
