Decision on Tesco store plan is delayed

A DECISION on whether a Tesco store will be built in Looe has been deferred.

The application to build a store off Barbican Road was due to be decided at last month's strategic planning committee.

But it was delayed after Cornwall Council said more information was needed with regard to a housing scheme and its relationship with the northern boundary of the site.

A council spokesman said the developers were also providing more information about a proposed petrol station and jet wash, which are not included in the current description of the development.

Tesco said there are no amendments to the original application. A spokesman said: "We are very happy to assist the council and provide the information needed."

Looe town councillor Brian Galipeau has called for the application to be discussed by the town's planning committee so that further recommendations can be made.

He said: "We should bear in mind that we will now have not only another report which prefers a possible Polean site over the proposed Tesco site, but we also have the Cornwall Council reports.

"We will be well placed to make a more powerful recommendation," he said.

"While it is true the original consultation deadline has passed, there is no reason why we cannot submit a further paper – which I am fairly confident would be brought to the attention of the strategic planning committee," he added.

Cornwall Council could not say when the application would next be discussed by the committee.
