WITH exclusive views over the Camel Trail and constructed entirely of wood it could easily be classed as a dream home.

But this new property will have residents of the feathered kind after being installed by Cornwall Council, Cormac and the Friends of the Camel Trail.

A lucky pair of barn owls will be able to enjoy the cosy owl box with its stunning views over the Polbrock area of the Camel Trail.

The council has been given Higher Level Stewardship for the area by Natural England which has provided additional funding, some of which has been used to provide the owl box.

James Dutton, Cormac Solutions' ranger for the Camel Trail, said: "With the decline in barn owl population and suitable nesting sites, it would be fantastic for the area and barn owl population if we can attract one to nest in the box.

"I hope we will soon see signs that the box is being used and ultimately that we attract a breeding pair."

To help find the best location for the box the council worked with the Friends of the Camel Trail.

Chairman Derek Julian said: "Barn owls require good visibility from the box with a clear flight path and ideally boxes should face south east."

And to make sure the box was built to barn owl standards, Dawn Roberts, secretary of The Friends of the Camel Trail, volunteered the services of her DIY enthusiast husband, Malc Roberts.

John Pomeroy, vice-chairman of the Camel Trail Partnership, added: "In support of the ongoing Stewardship Scheme on Polbrock Meadows the Friends of The Camel Trail Group have generously provided a barn owl box. It is great for the trail to have Cormac Solutions, Cornwall Council, the Camel Trail Partnership and the friends group all working together on such a positive project."

The Friends of the Camel Trail was set up in 2011 to promote and preserve the trail and its wildlife.

All are welcome to the group's AGM which is taking place at 7.30pm on Friday, September 28 at the Betjeman Centre in Wadebridge.
