POLRUAN residents are calling on two big companies to work together and help rid the town of "irritating" overhead power cables.
From October 1 Western Power Distribution will commence work to bury underground electricity cables, which run along West Street; however telecommunications lines and poles will remain.
BT have yet to confirm whether it will follow Western Power Distribution's lead.
Mike Goodwin has lived in West Street for 15 years, although the cables and poles pre-date his presence.
He said: "The overhead cables have been a source of irritation for all of that period, not least as those in Fowey were buried underground many years ago.
"My own feelings of exasperation have been shared by all those neighbours with whom I have discussed it over these years."
A representative of Western Power Distribution said that service providers regularly communicate information concerning upcoming work, and BT were aware of the impending opportunity.
BT Openreach confirmed that they were notified of the digging plans by WPD on September 20, however a survey of the potential project and its viability can take up to 15 days.
Mr Goodwin said: "WPD are already committed to carrying out excavation work to bury the cables, so BT's burden would be significantly less than it would otherwise have been."
The work is being undertaken by WPD in order to satisfy changing safety regulations concerning statutory clearances and building proximity, which are an ongoing concern for the company.
Walk Terrace resident Marjorie Barrie said that past attempts to encourage BT's participation had been scotched as the change was deemed "too expensive".
She added that affected Polruan residents had changed telecommunications service providers due to BT's lack of action.
She said: "Instead of spending thousands of pounds on mailing shots to attempt to lure people back, the money would be better spent in doing their bit to improve the environment in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."
