The Royal Cornwall Show will be the launch pad for a drive to boost the number of people visiting the Isles of Scilly.

Tourist trade has taken a knock around the country due to the combined effects of poor weather and depressed economic conditions.

But the Isles of Scilly are determined to buck the trend and to generate increased tourist traffic.

As a result the Islands Partnership, which is in charge of tourism on Scilly, has put together a plan designed to raise awareness of the spectacular islands that lie just 30 miles across the water off the coast of Cornwall.

It starts with the Isles of Scilly Pavilion at the Royal Cornwall Show on June 6, 7 and 8 – the first time the islands have exhibited there under one roof.

The large wooden building will be brightly decorated on the outside and inside there will be a wide range of exhibitors, grouped under six themes.

"It will be an oasis of blue and white; a veritable seascape contrasting with the stunning greens of Cornwall," said Truro-based David Meneer, who is co-ordinating the drive. "We are designing it so it will certainly stand out from the crowd."

Show secretary Christopher Riddle has welcomed the arrival of the Isles of Scilly Pavilion.

"We know that the show is an ideal base from which to promote a product or service, and when you have one as positive and attractive as the Isles of Scilly, I am in no doubt the pavilion will be very popular," he said.
