THE FAMILIES of loved ones buried at St Columb Cemetery have called on community leaders to clarify plans for graves on the site.
St Columb Major Town Council said it would debate the plans further until a decision is made.
The Cornish Guardian previously reported the plight of residents and families who have loved ones buried at the Trekenning Cemetery.
They are concerned about plans to top soil and grass seed over their graves.
They fear that the displays and surrounds in front of the graves will be removed, leaving nothing but a headstone.
At a full council meeting on Monday, the town council discussed the issue and insisted that although plans for the cemetery had been discussed, nothing has been agreed or approved.
Councillors decided the proposal would go back to its environment committee to discuss and investigate further.
Daphne Keast, who has relatives buried at the cemetery, told councillors at the meeting: "I assume all of you have received a letter from me.
"I do not want any upset … but we really need to understand what you're proposing to do and we have got a lot of questions."
Peter Hacket, a funeral director, said a similar proposal had been tried out while he was a sexton somewhere else but it "did not work".
"We tried what you are trying to do and it did not work," he said.
"It will cost the council a lot of money. We had so many problems because you cannot control it."
Janet Holmes told the councillors she was attending the meeting "to find out what is happening".
"It is the most beautiful cemetery in the world.
"Why you want to touch it, God only knows."
Councillor Alvin Martin said the cemetery is part of the town's history and the impact any changes would have on the community needed to be considered.
"I believe it is a beautiful place and I believe it needs to be maintained because of what it means to this community. I don't want anybody to leave here and think it is not emotional for us too."
Councillor Rob Stott said he was worried the issue was being used to "beat us with a stick".
"The thing that upsets me the most is that no decisions have been made. The policy is there but no decisions have been made.
"This should never be used for someone's personal gain and this is what I feel is happening here."
