On the morning of Thursday, May 30, the Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, will be arriving in Fowey to show its support to local fishermen. The 50 metre veteran of campaigns from the Arctic to the Amazon will be met by local fishermen upon its arrival. The ship will be anchored in Fowey for three days whilst Greenpeace volunteers meet and talk to people on the Quayside about their campaign and ask them to sign paper boats in support. Local small scale fishing communities are currently fighting Europe's fisheries policy to demand fair access to their local fish stocks. 77% of the boats that make up the UK fleet are under ten metres long and between them they provide around 65% of fishing jobs, yet they only receive 4% of UK quota. Over the past 12 months Greenpeace and local fishing communities along the UK coastline have formed an alliance to bring pressure on the fisheries Minister, Richard Benyon, and the UK government to support local sustainable fishermen gaining access to British fish. Nina Schrank, oceans campaigner for Greenpeace, said: "It is a real honour to campaign together with local fishermen, and one of Greenpeace's iconic ships. "Greenpeace will continue to work with fishermen to maintain the pressure on the UK government to deliver the best deal for local crews, their families and communities, and the local environment." During the Arctic Sunrise's stay in Fowey local people will get the chance to join Greenpeace's campaign for sustainable local fishing by coming to its campaign stall which will be located opposite the ship on the Town Quay.
