Cornish schools are being encouraged to get behind a campaign to save wild sea birds. It follows the deaths of thousands of birds which were covered in the sticky chemical PIB, Polyisobutene. More than 2,000 seabirds died along the south coast in April including guillemots, razorbills, puffins, gannets and gulls. The chemical is currently allowed to be legally disposed of at sea and there are calls for it to be banned. Environmental campaigner Jessica Hirons has created a package for schools which they can use to help children research the disaster and gives tips on how to support the campaign. Many schools have already got involved, creating petitions and writing letters. She said: "We would like as many schools as possible to get involved by spending a few hours with their children to produce posters, letters and perhaps even videos." The posters and letters will be sent to Richard Benyon, environment minster and the Maritime Coastguard Agency. Both the RSPB and Cornwall Wildlife Trust is backing her calls for schools to support the campaign. Matt Slater from the trust said: "We fully support this initiative and feel it is vital to educate people about the threat of PIB pollution. "We want to stress how important it is that government authorities and academic institutions investigate the causes of this terrible tragedy fully."
