A SUSPECTED arson attack in this early hours of this morning in Hayle has left a large building severely damaged.

Several 999 calls were made to a derelict dive school near Jewsons on Carnsew Road, Hayle, at 3.50am.

Three fire crews from Camborne and St Ives arrived at the scene soon after and the building is said to have been well alight when firefighters got to the blaze.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed that the fire is thought to have been started maliciously and police are now thought to be launching an investigation.

The building, which was described by a caller as a large shed approximately 20 metres by five metres, was extinguished by 6.15am.

A search by six members of the crew, using breathing equipment, established that nobody was inside the building.

Police are said to have been securing the site soon after and have closed a footpath nearby for safety reasons.
