FALMOUTH Coastguard coordinated the rescue of a boat in trouble more than 300 miles away in the early hours of this morning.
At about 5.20am, they received a distress signal from a yacht that had started taking on water as it travelled from Azores (a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean) back to England.
Coastguards quickly alerted the nearest vessel, which was only about five miles from the ailing boat.
The yacht was secured and is currently on its way to Germany.
"When you get that far out, you have to rely on passing vessels," said watch officer Alex Greig, from Falmouth Coastguard.
"It's the old law of the sea that if you hear a distress signal, you have to go, because you never know when you might need help yourself."
