PLANS for a new bakery in Polgooth have not risen well among some residents. This week, Cornwall Council is due to consider a proposal to change the use of the vacant Polgooth Press in Trelowth Road from a printworks to a bakery where they would both bake and sell food, and to alter the building's external elevations. All nine comments on the council's online planning register at the time of writing, were in objection. Most were on the grounds that the new business would threaten the existing post office and village shop, with some also expressing concerns about increased traffic and inadequate parking. Gavin Jones wrote: "Polgooth is fortunate to have an excellent village shop and post office. This facility is the heart of the village and provides many valuable services to the local population. "It already offers bakery products. It's viability will be significantly negatively impacted if permission is granted for the new bakery. "When Polgooth Press was in business there were low traffic volumes associated with it. This will increase with a bakery operation due to regular raw material deliveries and daily collection of products. Lynda Thomas wrote: "I live just a few hundred yards from this property on the opposite side of the road. Lower Trelowth Road is already used by speeding motorists and with extra traffic visiting this premises I feel it will be an accident just waiting to happen." Mr and Mrs Greeves, wrote on the register that if the bakery was built, it would result in a significant loss of sales and redundancy of staff at the local post office and village store. "The recently completed village appraisal/parish plan recognised the importance of the village shop and post office and the public survey confirmed that the three villages that make up the St Mewan Parish were adequately provided for with regard to local service provision," they added. After considering the proposal, St Mewan Parish Council registered no objections. The county council's Central Sub-Area Planning Committee will either approve or throw out the plans at a meeting in County Hall, Truro, on Monday. Planning officers have recommended the application for conditional approval.
