One of the Cornish schools considering forming the second largest co-operative trust in Britain has withdrawn its application.

Pendeen School informed parents last week that it was pulling out of the process, started in May, which would see it pool some of its resources with others schools in the region.

In a statement, chairman of the school governors John Penlerick said: "Pendeen School is 100% in favour of collaboration with the other schools. However, after much deliberation, the governors felt that at the present time the co-operative trust was not the right way forward for the school to facilitate that."

Mr Penlerick added that the parents they had spoken to were not in favour of entering the process. Pendeen School entered a consultation process with eight other schools in June to consider joining the Penwith Education Trust (PET), a co-op trust formed in April consisting of Pensans, Newlyn, Heamoor and Nancealverne schools. The other schools; Cape Cornwall, Humphry Davy, Gulval, St Just, Marazion, St Levan, Alverton and Mousehole, have now moved on to the next stage of the process.

Geoff Brighton, PET company secretary, said: "We are disappointed that Pendeen has decided not to join us at this moment in time. However, we recognise that each individual governing body has to make its own decisions about the future of its school, and we wish Pendeen School well."
